Sean Righter (CRD# 5419832), a former Morgan Stanley broker and current investment advisor, is facing multiple customer complaints alleging unsuitable investment recommendations, with claimed damages exceeding $1.3 million.

The most recent dispute was filed in March 2025 and alleges that Righter employed an unsuitable investment strategy in a client’s account from January 2021 through January 2025. The client is seeking $1.3 million in damages. Another similar pending complaint was filed in February 2025 concerning investment activity from November 2020 to January 2025.

Righter also has a history of prior complaints. In July 2024, a customer settled a suitability-related complaint for $20,000. Two additional disputes were filed in 2023, both alleging unsuitable recommendations from 2020 through 2023. Those claims were settled for $315,000 and $1.2 million, respectively.

Righter was most recently affiliated with Morgan Stanley in Irvine, California, and was previously employed by Citigroup Global Markets Inc. in Laguna Niguel, California. He has worked in the securities industry since 2007.

Unsuitable investment recommendations occur when a broker fails to tailor investment advice to a client’s age, risk tolerance, financial situation, and investment objectives. Firms like Morgan Stanley are required by FINRA Rule 3110 and Regulation Best Interest to supervise their advisors and ensure recommendations are appropriate. If a firm fails in its supervisory duties, it can be held liable for client losses.
