Toxic Tort: Xeljanz

Xelijanz (generic name tofacitinib), manufactured by Pfizer, is a medication used to treat several types of arthritis, including:

  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondytlitis
  • Polyarticular course juvenile idiopathic arthritis

The goal of the medication is to decrease pain, tenderness, and swelling in the joints. Xeljanz can also be used to treat ulcerative colitis, where it can reduce symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain.

What are the Side Effects of Xeljanz?

An ever-growing number of Xeljanz lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer, alleging that the drug caused serious side effect for users, such as:

  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Blood clots in the legs, thighs, lungs, or pelvic area
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Various cancers, including breast, colon, gastric, lung, melanoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, pancreatic, prostate, renal cell carcinoma, and thyroid.

The public dashboard of the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System has received more than  132,000 reports of serious side effects related to the taking of Xeljanz.

What is the status of Xeljanz class-action lawsuits?

Users of Xeljanz who have experienced health issues due to taking it may be eligible to file a lawsuit against Pfizer. In order to do that, you would need a documented medical diagnosis in support of your claim.
